The larger organizations are, the greater the need for coordination and collaboration. As organizations flatten, management hierarchies disappear, dotted-line reporting relationships proliferate, cross-functional teams emerge, virtual organizations and contract employees become the norm, and having a structure to define relationships becomes increasingly important.
