2A3 Kondensator 2P

The Soviet 2A3 Kondensator 2P is a

16-inch (406 mm), self-propelled how-

itzer, a mobile cannon used by artillery

units. Developed during the Cold War,

this machine was designed to fire nuclear

weapons.

Only four 2A3 machines were built in the

four years the Kondensator was in ser-

vice. Experts questioned the practicality

of the unit from the start, predicting that

the howitzer’s frame would break after a

few shots from its enormous cannon. All

four Kondensator howitzers were retired

in the mid-1960s.
