In Chapter 1, a distinction was drawn between the production designer and the art director in terms of definition, function, and areas of overlap. Within the world of effects, distinctions must also be made. As you might already imagine, visual effects are vastly different from special effects. The former is created on a computer screen, the latter happens in the physical world. Still, these terms are used interchangeably in error.
