Why a directing text? Or, more pointedly, why THIS directing text? There are so many wonderful texts available to the student director, what makes this one different? One of the things I have found in my directing classes is that student-directors often have questions about directing that those of us who have been doing it for many years rarely stop to consider any longer. It may be something as basic as “How much attention should I pay to the stage directions in a script?” or it may be something as complex as “How do I integrate the dynamics of the widely varying styles and personalities on my design team?” I find myself spending a great deal of time in class discussing these questions and the results are often quite rewarding and illuminating. ...
