Common Image File Formats
The following list is an overview of a few of the more common bitmapped image file formats that a digital compositing artist may encounter. It should not be considered a comprehensive list—there are hundreds of other methods to store images and more are constantly being defined. And even within the formats listed there are variations—the implementation standards are often poorly (or even contradictorily) defined and thus it is not at all uncommon to find that an image written into a specific file format by one system does not behave properly when read into another system.
