This chapter has two goals. The first goal is to introduce the basic concepts of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). To do this, we will have to answer four questions:
1. What is a directory?
2. What is a protocol?
3. What is a Directory Access Protocol (DAP)?
4. Why is LDAP called a “lightweight” Directory Access Protocol?
The second goal of this first chapter is to introduce some of the terminology you will need to know to work with LDAP.
