Identity Inclusion: The Perennial Unfinished Business of Race and Gender

FOR ALL THE ATTENTION THAT RACE AND gender have received over the past two generations, progress has not yet achieved breakthrough status. The advancement of women—White women, specifically—has been the most marked, and this is the major focus of diversity efforts, globally and across industries. The advancement of those who are non-White, however, has been shamefully marginal, and is more worrisome, because it is a goal that has been pursued with limited conviction and commitment until very recently in the overwhelming public’s and corporate antiracism response in the wake of George Floyd’s killing by police in Minneapolis in May of 2020.
