Telling the Visual Story

I’m sometimes asked what story I’d most like to do, what fire burns in my gut? That story is the dullest one of which you can think (the making of the Interstate Commerce Commission budget comes to mind), and the fire in my gut is to look and listen for the small things that will bring it to life.

Reporters report. Writers write. They attend events. Observe. Tell us what happened. If you subscribe to such conventional wisdom, your work will forever imitate what everyone else is doing. Odd as it may sound, the most powerful visual storytellers often stop reporting and writing, stand back, and serve as producers in helping their story subjects tell the story.
