The lighting designer’s work is often hampered by the tightness of onstage lighting positions. Any set design — even a traditional box set with a ceiling — can be troublesome for the lighting designer when solid scenery completely masks critical onstage lighting positions.
Perhaps the best-known solution to this problem is to mount a three-inch Fresnel — an inky — behind a beam on the set or inside a piece of furniture.
