What Is a Process?

There is no product or service without a process. Whenever there is work that gets repeated to produce that product or service, you have a process. Whether you have it written down or not, there is a process. Processes do not apply only to manufacturing or production. They apply to all aspects of your business that have work activities (e.g., the order process, fulfillment, design / development, and support).

Before you can focus on process improvement, it is important to define what the process is. A process is the organization of people, equipment, procedures, and materials into the work activities needed to produce a specified output.
