Using People and Being Used. It’s Not as Bad as It Sounds.

Using people in business is wrong. It’s evil. Narcissistic. Immoral. Using people as stepping stones is, well, just abhorrent. If that is your intransigent thinking, then you are stuck, and here’s why.

Business relationship-building is not a group therapy session. It is a collection of users who learn and practice the skills of using.

Let’s start by defining “using others” in business. It is building relationships for the sole purpose of creating opportunities for you, seeking favors, searching for leads, contacts and connections, and even pursuing advice and counsel. There are two important corollaries here.
