Simple Stresses and Strains

CHAPTER OBJECTIVES

In this chapter, we will learn about:

  • Various types of (a) stresses as tensile and compressive stresses, positive and negative shear stresses, complementary shear stresses, volumetric stress; (b) strains as longitudinal strain, lateral strain, shear strain; and (c) strain energy absorbed by a body during deformation.
  • Difference between gradual, sudden and impact loads.
  • Elastic constants of a material as Young’s modulus, Bulk modulus, Shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio as deformation in a body depend on these elastic constants.
  • Stresses developed in a bar due to its own weight.
  • Bar of uniform strength in which stress due to self-weight remains constant.
  • Variation of stress in a stepped bar, uniformly ...
