The raison d’être for a nonprofit is its purpose. Nonprofits exist to make a difference, whether through the services they provide for their constituents or by impacting some social, environmental, or economic justice issue that is their purpose and forms their “bottom line.” The Nonprofit Management Model (Figure 3.1) offers a set of questions that can be used to engage the management and staff in a dialogue about the purpose of their organization. Answering these questions brings in the discipline and wisdom of business practices with sensitivity towards the issues pertinent to the nonprofit organizations.
