Objectives and Outputs

No matter how you define it, the strategic staffing/workforce planning process has one specific objective (described in more detail later in this chapter): to create a longer-term context within which shorter-term staffing decisions can be made most effectively. The process has two major outputs:

  • Staffing strategy. A staffing strategy is a long-term, directional plan that describes what an organization is going to do over the course of its planning horizon (e.g., the coming four quarters or three to five years) to ensure that its supply of staff (both staffing levels and current capabilities) matches its demand for staff (i.e., the number of staff and the capabilities needed to implement business strategies and plans). ...
