Technology and manufacturing
This chapter aims to broaden the discussion of strategy to include technology and manufacturing. First, it shows how to undertake an audit of the organisation's technology base, and this is followed by several ways of displaying which technologies are common across different activities. The chapter then shows how the strategic implications of the technology portfolio may be examined. For manufacturing, the aim is to introduce a number of strategic concepts, including the focused factory, the learning curve, the impact of modern manufacturing concepts, and the all-important concept of striving for world-class performance, which, of course, extends beyond manufacturing.
