The United States’ national security and contemporary operating environments have been characterized by the U.S. Army War College Strategic Leadership Primer and other Department of Defense (DoD) documents as volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA).1 Operating effectively in this context requires leaders to manage the multiple demands of such an environment by enhancing their strategic thinking.
