“To do a contract we need nine signoffs.”

“Our prints cannot be released on time.”

“For a five-dollar PO, we need five signoffs.”

“Our on-time delivery for spare parts is 45%.”

“All our shipments are late, and we allow any customer to expedite.”

Introduction

These statements are from situations that I encountered over the years. Each points to a work process, formal or informal, that runs through multiple departments or business units within the same organization.

For some reason, the will to fix processes seems less than the will to solve other day-to-day obstacles. Processes that are interdepartmental pose accountability challenges. Where would one even start? Therefore, quick fixes seem easier than systemic approaches ...
