There are four categories of legally required benefits: Social Security programs (unemployment insurance, old age, survivor, disability insurance, and Medicare under the Social Security Act of 1935), workers’ compensation (various state compulsory disability laws), unpaid family and medical leave (Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993), and health insurance (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010). All provide protection programs to employees and their dependents.
