What do managers do?
For many readers this question will, I presume, sound like the sort of interrogation that announces a joke. I know lots of jokes about management consultants but for some reason I do not seem to know any good jokes about managers. I could, however, begin this analysis of organizational storytelling with a joke, for there are clear narrative similarities between jokes and stories: Both place actors in a scene and then outline an interaction between events, the actors and the situation, which proceeds to a conclusion that – in the case of the joke – is designed to generate laughter.
