Did you know that in the United States the federal government publishes its own laws, but state law is published by publishers? Specifically Thomson Reuters and LexisNexis. They have contracts with the 50 states to publish and provide access. Paid access. In many cases, the access is free for individuals, but any real use such as by corporations or lawyers often requires subscription fees.
Things have gotten better with the (divided) Supreme Court ruling in Georgia v. Public.Resource.Org in 2020 that states can’t copyright annotations to the law. Annotations being not the law, but associated judicial rulings that help you understand and interpret the law.
