I’ve reserved this chapter for emerging technologies that will require more time to reach maturity compared to the technologies I’ve previously discussed in this book. That doesn’t mean that they are irrelevant when it comes to career considerations, especially since in the case of quantum computing, major corporations, including Google, Microsoft, and IBM, are already hiring personnel and expanding their research. As of this writing, IBM’s research division already has over 4,000 employees with quantum computing as one of its major projects.1 In fact, there are a number of startups in this field already, and career websites indicate that the demand for qualified people in this new field far exceeds the supply. ...
