CHAPTER 8

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) is a technology that totally immerses someone in a simulated reality. Augmented reality is a technology that augments reality. In other words, people might wear special glasses that enable them to view a restaurant and then see an overlay of customer reviews for it. Mixed reality is where the real world is augmented in such a way that people see the real world but can also perform virtual tasks within that world. An example of this technology is furniture fitting where a piece of virtual furniture can be placed in a real environment. As VR is the more general term for simulated environments, we’ll use that term the rest of this chapter to describe simulated reality of any kind.
