Network File Access
In a world where diverse operating systems, file systems, and standards and specifications have become common, a standard file access mechanism is essential for sharing and transferring files between computers on an internetwork. Network File System (NFS) protocol is one such common file access mechanism provided by Sun Microsystems, Inc. NFS provides specifications for implementing a seamless environment where computers operating on varied operating systems can access files. The official specification for this protocol is available in RFC 1094. NFS version 3, which aims at implementing a Web-based file access mechanism, is proposed in RFC 1813.
