Other Boot Loader Options
An alternative boot loader is LOADLIN. LOADLIN is a DOS-based boot loader program that boots Linux. Because it is DOS-based, your system must be configured to first boot to DOS and then run LOADLIN.EXE to switch to Linux. LOADLIN works well in situations in which a certain hardware component depends on a DOS driver to set a few proprietary registers before it is recognized by another operating system. Table 12.13 depicts the steps of the boot sequence using LOADLIN.
Master Boot Record | Boot Sector Type | Operating System |
---|---|---|
DOS-MBR | DOS | io.sys->msdos.sys->COMMAND.COM |
LOADLIN.EXE | Linux kernel |
