I added a password option to /etc/lilo.conf, but I don't want anyone to read it. What are my options?

You have two options here, the best one being to just chmod 600 lilo.conf so only root can read it. The other option is to remove it (or move it to a floppy disk for safekeeping). The /etc/lilo.conf is required only when you need to run LILO so LILO knows how (and where) to build the map file. But neither /etc/lilo.conf nor /sbin/lilo are actually used during the boot process.

I get a 0x× 10 error during loading, and bootup stops.

This is a fatal error most often caused by a bad boot floppy. Some old floppy controllers will also give you this error. Replace the floppy. If the error continues, you might need to find another way ...
