Topology Generation
Active Directory replication within a single site consists of ring topology that is generated by the Knowledge Consistency Checker (KCC). By default, the KCC runs every 15 minutes and goes through a two-step process as it prepares to create connection objects.
The KCC is the sole replication topology generator within the confines of a site, and it performs this task automatically. The topology it generates is a bidirectional ring between DCs, generated by using the MEMCMP function to put the DSA GUIDs in order. It then creates connection objects to create replication partners.
