Understanding Word Add-Ins
Templates and wizards are powerful, but if you want to customize your Word environment even more, you should know about add-ins. These are separate dynamic link libraries (.DLLs) that extend Word's capabilities, adding new features and custom commands. They're compiled, so they typically run faster than macros can. Like DLLs, they have access to the full capabilities of the Windows operating system. After they're built, they are renamed as .WLLs to indicate that they are Word linked libraries.
