Understanding basic equipment specifications
The performance of an audio system may be measured to determine its effect on a sound signal passed through it, and it may also be assessed subjectively (in other words, by listening to it). Theoretically, if a system introduces an audible modification to the sound signal then one should also be able to measure it, provided that the right test can be devised and suitable equipment is available, but the difficulty of achieving this ideal is always increasing as the audible differences between systems become ever smaller, and the absolute fidelity of recording and reproduction improves.
