The history of sociology and management studies has been characterised by their shared desire to gain scientific status and the attendant academic respectability. This chapter brings out the aspects of this intertwined history to shed light on their present status and identity. In the initial phase of their disciplinary consolidation, both the disciplines struggled for institutional and professional legitimacy to establish themselves as scholarly branches of knowledge.
