There is one last critical ingredient in BCG’s success in diffusing PTO throughout the firm, and that is the role played by the facilitator. While running an initial experiment without a designated facilitator is quite plausible, we found that, as the number of teams increased, the presence of facilitators proved invaluable for keeping the process moving smoothly, sustaining interest, and expanding the effort. As one BCG partner put it: “PTO is a best practice, but let’s be honest—we just don’t do it without a facilitator.”
