3.1 Introduction: what is visual realism?
We experience the real world through the operation of our senses of sight, touch, smell, audition and taste, all of which convey information to the brain. The senses are complex systems but their basic mode of operation involves being stimulated by external energies such as light or sound. This stimulation is transformed into a form usable by the brain and provides information regarding the form and content of the external world and of the perceiver’s position within this world.
