Abstract:
In this chapter we will discuss the potential and challenges for silicon-on-insulator (SOI) as a substrate for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Silicon photonics has attracted a lot of attention in recent past years and has grown quickly from a niche research field to a technology with considerable industrial traction. It is now regarded as one of the most promising routes towards large-scale deployment of photonic ICs.
