2. We purposefully use the terms “historically dominant” and “historically marginalized” to refer to the racioethnic groups throughout the book. Doing so recognizes the ways in which race has been constructed over time and avoids terms like “majority” and “minority,” which are often numerical misnomers: what matters more to us is the representation of people with power than the overall number of people in groups.
