In 1996, CEO John Seffrin proposed ambitious goals for the American Cancer Society. By 2015, he declared, the number of cancer death rates would fall by half and the number of people diagnosed with the disease would be reduced by a quarter. Results to date have been encouraging. With improved prevention and therapy, cancer mortality rates have declined steadily. Between 2002 and 2004, for example, cancer death rates declined more than 2 percent per year.
