The purpose of this book is to make available to students those of the essays previously published in my Essays in Monetary Economics and Further Essays in Monetary Economics that have proved to be most useful for teaching advanced monetary economics. For this purpose I circularized teachers in a variety of countries to find out which essays they found most useful and worth keeping available. Fortunately, there was a consensus on essays drawn from the first section of each book, with one exception: ‘The Monetary Approach to Balance-of-Payments Theory’, Chapter 9 in Further Essays, and that particular essay is now also available in a paperback edition of Jacob A.
