Prologue

As I opened my Christmas gifts, I came to the realization that none of my gifts were made in the United States. A shirt from China, another shirt from Indonesia, a tablet made in China, and a radio-controlled car made in China. Later in the day, when I took some medicine, one pill was made in India and the other was made in Israel. Then when I got on the Internet, I used a router made in China and a laptop made in China. It was so distressing that I had a drink made in Scotland.

I work extensively in manufacturing, helping companies plan, organize, and implement their strategies for supply chain and manufacturing operations. Often I’m called in to help solve supply chain problems and to identify and mitigate supply chain risks. Much ...
