Observations on Employment and the Number of Establishments
Introduction
Previously presented figures and tables have shown that both manufacturing employment and the number of manufacturing establishments have seen substantial reductions since 1990. However patterns have emerged that differentiate certain periods within the time span between 1990 and 2012. The historical evolution tends to be segmented as follows:
1990 | Mild recession |
1991–1999/2000 | Growth in employment; growth in the number of establishments Anomalies include aerospace and apparel which experienced declines in employment |
2001 | Mild recession |
2001–2007 | The economy is growing but it appears that a new trend is at work in manufacturing with significant reductions ... |
