One of the most powerful and useful features of ASP.NET is the ability for ASP.NET Web pages to interact seamlessly with database systems. Databases, as we'll discuss in detail in this hour, are software applications designed to serve as repositories of data. For example, Amazon.com's product information is stored in a database.
In this hour we will look at what databases are and how data is stored in databases. We'll also quickly examine a number of popular commercial and free database systems, focusing specifically on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine, a free database system from Microsoft that is included in this book's accompanying CD.
