A few years ago, Joe was in a meeting discussing ideas for planning a future conference for colleagues that study groups and teams. This in-person meeting included people at varying levels of experience within the occupation as well as students learning to become professionals. As the meeting carried on, there were some challenges that needed to be addressed and so ideas were being thrown out as options.

The woman next to Joe tried several times to interject her idea. She then leaned over to Joe and told him her idea, which he thought was really quite good. A minute or so passed, and Joe raised his hand, butted in, and said pointing to his neighbor, “I believe Margie has an idea that we need to hear.” All eyes turned to her and she shared her idea.

As the meeting continued, it became clear that this was definitely the best idea and was adopted as the solution to the group’s challenge. However, Joe felt both good and bad after this situation. He was happy he was able to be an ally to his colleague and ...
