Companies are increasingly offering bundled solutions in the form of products and services when selling to customers. These “bundled” solutions often involve multiple products or a combination of products and services. The packaging of multiple solutions to company’s problems, which we will refer to as deliverables, results in two fundamental accounting issues in determining the amount of revenue to be recorded. Throughout the book, we will be referring to deliverables, elements, and obligations under multiple-element arrangements. These items are to be considered interchangeable.
