In the summer of 2017, the two of us—Charlie Baker and Steve Kadish—started talking about whether we might put down on paper the practices we had developed over nearly three decades of working together—our organized methods for “fixing things.” Our focus has been on the public sector—on pragmatic ways to get things done in government and in nonprofit organizations. We had experienced how government operates and believed that it could, and should, function better—not just for those who have special access, but for everyone.
