Practice Suffering Strangers
This is a simple practice that, when done regularly, opens your heart as wide as the world.
Whenever you see a photo of people who look foreign, different, in terrible circumstances, suffering greatly, take a moment to connect with them. Don’t turn away—turn toward them. Make eye contact with them. Develop a momentary relationship, a witnessing of them. Remind yourself that they’re just like you. This only takes a moment. Let it become a habit. Whatever your first emotions—sorrow, anger, grief, outrage—as you connect with no-longer-strangers, your first hot reactions will gentle into the coolness of compassion. You ...
