Abstract
A wide variety of instruments and techniques are used to characterize the degradation of electrical equipment. Some involve visual examination, whereas others use chemical analysis or electrical measurements. Often an investigation will require more than one technique and so nondestructive methods will be used before the destructive techniques. All methods have advantages and disadvantages that need to be understood to obtain reliable results.
