When you learn a new editing technique in a chemical darkroom, you usually have to learn some new theories and concepts. But some techniques also require you to practice a lot of manual dexterity. With digital editing, your computer provides you with instant craftsmanship, so you don’t have to spend a lot of time (and expensive materials) practicing particular types of exposure manipulations, retouchings, or difficult compositing tricks.
