Introduction

Sometimes in life, the best solutions to problems require the least amount of heavy lifting. The same is true for visual effects. This perspective especially holds true when considering the primary role of visual effects contributing to the mood of the story, or gameplay, and integrating characters within their environments. Quite often the best visual effects are the simplest, requiring very little manipulation. This chapter focuses on building visual effects by simply manipulating the rendering engine, manipulating the lights, or manipulating a combination of both.
