The Detailed Estimation Process
The recommended estimation process for business and IT projects is outlined in Figure 14.5. It involves slightly different steps for software developments and business and infrastructure projects such as PC installation, mainframe upgrades, LAN installation, wide area network (WAN) installation, and so on.

As we noted earlier, whereas there has been extensive research into techniques such as function points for estimating software development, there has been little research into formal estimation techniques for business and infrastructure projects.
