7: Other systems
7.1: General comments
The simplicity of the antisymmetric quadrupole doublet makes it a particularly attractive system, but it is never capable of forming a real image of a real object. This fact led Bauer (1964, 1965–66) to associate a triplet with a doublet, thus forming a quintuplet objective, the role of the triplet being to convert the immersed image into a real image with unit magnification. This system has been pursued by Dhuicq (1968a) and, briefly, by Meads (see Hawkes, 1966b). We have already mentioned many features of Bauer's system, and we merely refer to the schematic diagram showing the principal parameters (Fig. 22A in Quadrupole systems: Their suitability for specific purposes).
