For my generation, hacking was not an evil term associated with identity theft or cybercrime. Hacking meant exploiting a technology beyond the original product’s design, finding a novel use for ordinary items, or accessing something without paying. The latter is not a nice (or ethical) thing to do, but this mentality fueled the reduction or removal of cost for a number of products.
I am part of a magical generation that grew up with computers in our homes that were absolutely useless straight out of the box.
