One study has estimated that the average manager spends over 20% of his time dealing with conflict.24 Because so much of a project manager’s time is taken up with active conflict and its residual aftermath, we need to understand this natural process within the project management context. This section of the chapter is intended to more formally explore the process of conflict, examine the nature of conflict for project teams and managers, develop a model of conflict behavior, and foster an understanding of some of the most common methods for de-escalating conflict.
