4: Friction and wear
Abstract
Friction is the force that resists the sliding or rolling of solid surfaces, while wear is the progressive removal of the material from these surfaces. Basic concepts and laws of friction along with the classical and modern theories of friction are introduced in detail. Different mechanisms of friction are described including adhesion, ploughing, and stick-slip phenomenon. The discussion is emerged to include nanoscale friction and frictional heating and covers different techniques used in the measurements of interface temperature.
